Occasionally, after surgery or accidents, scar tissue forms that is not the same color as the surrounding tissue. In many cases this scar tissue can be camouflaged by adding pigment, thus reducing its appearance. This process is most effective on scars that are hypopigmented (lighter than surrounding tissue). Adding pigment does not reduce the appearance of keloid scars. Most often this procedure is done on facial scars and scars that involve the pigmented tissue of the lips.
